Aikido

The Mansfield Tomiki Aikido Club has been in continuous operation since 1983 and has a long history of excellence in practice and competition, producing many black belt students (yudansha) during that time. The Mansfield Tomiki Aikido club’s mission is to spread the art and sport of Tomiki Aikido and through that process help students grow in their personal lives.

Club History:
The club was started by Merritt Stevens sensei in 1983 through his connection to local law enforcement officers. It moved its base of operations into the Mansfield Area Y in mid 1984 and has been a Y based club since then. The members of the club have participated in regional, state wide national and international events since its inception. Members have competed in every national Tomiki aikido tournament since 1990 and have gone as far as Japan, England and Australia to practice and compete. All Mansfield Tomiki Aikido club instructors are certified internationally by the Japan Aikido Association and nationally by the Japan Aikido Association/USA

Practice:
Practice will consist of learning basic skills (falling, body movement, balance breaking and blending), and learning basic and advanced Aikido techniques such as the Junanahon (the 17 basic techniques developed by Professor Tomiki) and goshin kata (self defense set for black belt promotion). Practice time will also be devoted to the development of competition skills and use of the classic samurai weapons of bokken (wooden sword), tanto (practice knife) and jo (short staff).

Membership:
Students from all walks of life are accepted as members and all students are expected to help each other develop their skills through cooperative, friendly practice and competition. The minimum age for acceptance into the club is 13 years of age, although younger students are at times accepted if accompanied by an older sibling or parent. However, the instructors of the Mansfield Tomiki Aikido club reserve the right of admission to the club at all times and may cancel such admission to the club at any time for just cause. All new members are required to sign a waiver of liability upon joining the club and are required to pay membership fees for practice to the Mansfield Area Y as set forth in the Y’s program literature. Club members are expected to practice together at least twice per week in accordance with the Mansfield Area Y’s program schedule. Students will be expected to wear suitable athletic practice clothing, not street clothing to class until the time of their first test. After their first promotion in rank students must wear a martial arts uniform accepted by the instructors (judogi or karategi) that is in good condition, clean and neatly kept. Any questions regarding what it considered acceptable may be addressed to the instructors. Good personal hygiene is also expected of all students as a sign of respect for themselves and other club members. Students are required to pay the instructors examination and promotion registration fees as set forth in this literature and these fees may vary without needing to be posted in this or any other literature. Basic promotion fees are $25.00 per test for the first three promotions (red stripe, yellow belt and orange belt), $50.00 for the next two promotions (green belt and blue belt), $75.00 for brown belt and $100 and up for black belt promotions.
